Average credit card processing rates for salons, spas and barbershops in Canada

Salons and spas mix walk-in card-present payments with online booking deposits and no-show charges, and those card-not-present transactions carry meaningfully higher interchange. Tips inflate tickets, and many salon processors bundle booking software with payments — convenient, but the bundled processing rate is rarely the market rate.

Published Canadian small-business reference band. Our direct cohort of Canadian salons, spas and barbershops is still filling in — figures switch to street-price data automatically once at least 8 businesses contribute.

How these numbers are computed

Every figure is an effective rate: everything a business paid its processor in a month divided by its card volume that month — the only number that captures every hidden fee.

The data comes from two anonymized sources: processing statements analyzed by the free FinalPOS statement analyzer (each contributing one normalized, PII-free observation) and aggregate processing totals from businesses running FinalPOS. Only medians and quartiles over cohorts of at least 8 businesses are ever published, statements older than 18 months age out, and implausible rates (data problems, not real pricing) are excluded.

Where a cohort is still too small, we show the published Canadian small-business reference band (roughly 2.1%–2.9% blended) and say so. Figures update automatically as new statements are analyzed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good processing rate for salons, spas and barbershops in Canada?

Most Canadian small businesses land between roughly 2.1% and 2.9% measured as an effective rate (total monthly fees divided by card volume). We publish a street-price figure specific to salons, spas and barbershops once at least 8 businesses in the cohort have contributed anonymized statements.

What is an effective rate?

Everything you paid your processor in a month divided by your card volume that month. Unlike a quoted rate, it captures every per-transaction fee, monthly fee, and surcharge — it's the only number two businesses can honestly compare.

How do I find out what I'm paying?

Upload a recent processing statement to the free FinalPOS statement analyzer. The AI itemizes every fee, splits true interchange from processor markup, scores your rate 0–100 against businesses like yours, and computes what you'd save on transparent interchange-plus pricing.
