Unit-based products: sell by weight, volume or any unit

Final now supports unit-based products: custom units of measure and multi-unit product groupings, so you can sell by the pound, the metre, the glass, or any unit that fits your business.

Sell by the pound, the metre, the glass, or any unit you define

Until now every product in Final sold by 'Each'. That worked for many businesses. It did not work for the butcher selling by the kilogram, the lumber yard selling by the foot, the wine bar selling by the glass, or the fabric shop selling by the metre.

Unit-based products change that. Final now supports custom units of measure and flexible product groupings across your whole catalog.

What's new

Sell in any unit. Set the selling unit on a product variant: kilograms, litres, metres, or something of your own such as 'glass' or 'bundle'. Standard units for weight, volume and length come pre-loaded. Custom units are yours to create and name.

The math is the system's job, not the cashier's. When a measured item is tapped or scanned at checkout, a quantity prompt opens. The cashier keys in the amount (1.35 kg, 2.5 m) and the line total calculates automatically: rate times quantity, rounded correctly to the cent.

Pooled inventory across unit sizes. Sell wine by the bottle and by the glass from the same stock. Sell lumber by the board foot and by the case. When any variant sells, the shared pool decrements by the right base-unit amount. No manual case-break steps, no stock drift.

Receipts built for measured goods. Measured lines print as quantity @ rate = total in your selling unit, the format expected for weighed and measured goods.

Refunds work as you would expect. A refund on a fractional line uses the exact quantity, unit and rate stored at the time of sale, never recomputed from the live catalog. Partial refunds add up to the cent.

Who this is for

  • Grocery, butcher, deli and bulk food

  • Hardware, lumber and building supplies

  • Fabric, rope and materials sold by length

  • Wine bars, breweries and venues selling by the pour

  • Any business that receives inventory in cases and sells in singles

How to get started

Open a product variant in Manage, find the Sold in field, and choose or create your unit. Set your price per unit and you are done. The till handles the rest. Stock tracking is optional: measured items work at checkout whether or not you track inventory.

Bulk setup through CSV import is planned for a later phase, so large catalogs will not need per-item editing for long.
