How to split a payment across multiple tenders

Take a single sale across more than one tender — for example part cash and part card. Enter each amount on the split screen and pay it off until the balance reaches zero.

What does splitting a payment mean?

Splitting a payment lets you take a single sale across more than one tender — for example, part cash and part card. You charge one amount, then charge the remaining balance with another payment, until the full total is paid. On the payment screen this is the Partial payment option.

Before you begin

You need an open session with items in the cart, and you take the payment at checkout — see "How to take a payment."

How to split a payment

  1. Ring up the sale and tap your flow's checkout button to open the payment screen. It shows the Total amount to be charged and the Remaining balance.

  2. Tap Partial payment.

  3. Enter the amount to be charged for the first tender. You can't enter more than the amount due, and the screen shows the remaining balance.

  4. Take that portion with a payment method — for example Cash, Tap to pay, Bluetooth Terminal, or Cloud Terminal.

  5. The Remaining balance updates. Tap Partial payment again and repeat for each tender until the balance reaches zero.

  6. When the remaining balance reaches zero, the sale is complete and recorded in Orders.

Tip: For the last portion, charge the full remaining balance to bring it to zero and finish the sale.
