How to avoid Shopify's new 0.35% tax calculation fee.
Shopify Tax now meters in-store sales, and since May 2026 it covers Canadian stores with a lifetime fee threshold for new shops. Here is the free workaround inside Shopify, and when moving your point of sale is the cleaner fix.

You can avoid Shopify's tax calculation fee in one of two ways: turn off Shopify Tax and handle rates yourself with Basic Tax or manual settings, or take your sales somewhere the fee cannot follow, starting with your in-store volume. The Shopify tax calculation fee is a per-order charge of up to 0.35% that kicks in once your store passes $100,000 in sales, and as of May 13, 2026 it applies to Canadian merchants too.
Everything below is based on Shopify's published Shopify Tax pricing as of August 2026. These terms have changed more than once in the last three years, so treat the specifics as a snapshot and confirm them before you act.
What is Shopify's tax calculation fee?
Shopify Tax is the automatic tax calculation service built into Shopify. It looks up the right rate for each order, and once your store crosses the fee-free threshold, Shopify charges for that lookup on every order: 0.35% per order for US merchants on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans, 0.25% on Plus, capped at $0.99 USD per order.
The part many merchants miss is where it applies. The fee covers online orders, connected sales channels, the Shop app, and point of sale transactions. POS orders were exempt until 2024. Since then, every counter sale is metered the same way as an online order.
On a single sale the math looks harmless: 0.35% of a $50 ticket is about 18 cents. Across a full month of in-store volume it becomes a real line item. Merchants have reported monthly tax fee charges in the hundreds of dollars (based on public posts in Shopify's community forum discussing the POS fee change).

What changed in 2026?
Two things, both dated May 13, 2026.
First, Shopify Tax expanded to Canada. Canadian stores now pay 0.25% per order on Starter through Advanced plans and 0.15% on Plus, capped at $0.99 CAD per order, once global sales pass $100,000 CAD.
Second, the threshold changed shape. Stores created before May 13, 2026 keep a fee-free allowance that resets every calendar year. Stores created on or after that date get a single lifetime allowance of $100,000. Cross it once and every calculated order after that carries the fee. For a new store doing steady volume, that is not a fee you grow out of. It is a fee you grow into.
Can you turn the fee off without leaving Shopify?
Yes. Deactivate Shopify Tax and use Basic Tax, which applies registration-based rates (the rates for the regions where you are registered to collect tax) with no per-order fee, or set your rates manually.
The trade-off is precision. Shopify Tax exists because US ecommerce tax is a mess of address-level rates, product-specific rules, and filing thresholds across dozens of states. If you ship nationwide from a US warehouse, the automation can be worth the fee, and you should do that math honestly before changing anything.
A single-location shop is a different story. The rate at your counter is set by where your counter sits. It was the same yesterday and it will be the same tomorrow. Paying a percentage of every sale to recalculate a number that never changes is why the POS side of this fee draws the loudest complaints.
When does switching your POS make more sense?
Nobody should replace their point of sale over a fee capped at 99 cents an order, so let's not pretend otherwise. The tax calculation fee matters because of what sits around it: a monthly subscription, app charges, processing, and now a metered fee on tax math. Each piece is small. The stack is not.
That is why the honest comparison is total cost, not any single fee. POS systems with no monthly fee shift the math entirely: Final has no monthly software subscription, and you pay per transaction instead. Taxes are configured once in the Merchant Hub. You create tax groups and rates, assign them to products, and checkout applies them automatically with no calculation fee attached (here is how tax settings work in the Merchant Hub). Products, customers, and categories come across in bulk by CSV or XLSX import.
And because there is no subscription, you can set Final up in parallel and switch with no downtime: keep your current setup live, build and test Final beside it, and flip when your staff is ready.
What is Shopiflow?
The usual cost of switching a POS has little to do with software pricing: it is retraining staff who have muscle memory in the old checkout. Shopiflow POS is a ready-made flow from Final's product team built for exactly this move. It is a dark-mode tablet POS with a smart grid, discounts at cart or line-item level, customer profiles, barcode scanning, and email or SMS receipts, designed so a team coming off Shopify POS lands somewhere that feels familiar on day one.
It is also not locked in place. Final is a prompt-based POS builder, so when your checkout needs something Shopiflow does not include, you describe the change and reshape the flow instead of filing a feature request. Open the flow page and tap Try POS to run it in your browser.

So, how do you avoid Shopify's tax calculation fee?
Inside Shopify: deactivate Shopify Tax and run Basic Tax or manual rates, accepting less precise calculations in exchange for a fee of zero. Outside Shopify: move your in-store sales to a point of sale that does not meter tax math, which removes the fee and the monthly software bill in the same move. If the tax rate at your counter never changes, stop paying a percentage to calculate it.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Shopify tax calculation fee?
For US merchants it is 0.35% per order on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans and 0.25% on Plus, capped at $0.99 USD per order. Canadian merchants pay 0.25% on standard plans and 0.15% on Plus, capped at $0.99 CAD, based on Shopify's published pricing as of August 2026.
Does Shopify charge the tax fee on in-store POS sales?
Yes. Point of sale transactions were exempt until 2024, but they are now metered the same way as online orders once your store passes the fee-free threshold.
Is Shopify Tax free under $100,000 in sales?
Yes, but the shape of the threshold changed. Stores created before May 13, 2026 get an allowance that resets each calendar year, while stores created on or after that date get a single lifetime allowance of $100,000. New stores that cross it pay the fee on every calculated order from then on.
Can I use Basic Tax instead of Shopify Tax?
Yes. Basic Tax applies registration-based rates with no per-order fee, and manual rates remain an option. The trade-off is losing address-level accuracy and automatic product categorization, which matters most for US ecommerce sellers shipping into many states.
Does Final POS charge a tax calculation fee?
No. Taxes in Final are configured as tax groups and rates in the Merchant Hub and applied automatically at checkout at no extra cost. Final has no monthly software fee; merchants pay per transaction.
