The Best Square Alternatives in Canada (2026): Fees, Hardware and How to Switch
Final is the best Square alternative in Canada: lower Interac and credit rates than Square, no monthly software fee and direct migration of your Square data. Here's the catch with Helcim, Shopify POS, Moneris, Lightspeed and Clover.

The best Square alternative in Canada is Final. It charges no monthly software fee and takes 1.99% + 10¢ on in-person credit and 0.5% + 7¢ on Interac debit. It also lets you change how your checkout works instead of working around it. Helcim, Shopify POS, Moneris, Lightspeed and Clover are the other Square alternatives in Canada you'll see, and each one comes with a catch that Final doesn't have. Below is that catch for each, with the numbers.
Every price comes from each provider's published Canadian pricing as of October 2026. Treat the figures as a snapshot and check them yourself before you sign.
Why is Final the best Square alternative in Canada?
Because it costs less where you feel it and gives you control of the counter.
No monthly software fee. You pay per transaction through Final Pay, so a slow month costs you less.
Lower rates than Square: 1.99% + $0.10 in person, 0.5% + $0.07 on Interac debit, and 2.49% + $0.10 for keyed-in payments and payment links. American Express adds 1%. Full details are on the Final Pay pricing page.
A checkout you can change. Use a ready-made flow from the Flow Library as it is, or adjust it in Flow Studio. Here's why that flexibility matters more than a feature checklist.
Your Square data comes straight across. The Integrations page in Merchant Hub migrates from Square directly.
Hardware for every counter: Final Touch, Final Touch Pro or Final Move, or Tap to Pay on a supported phone with no extra hardware. Native Stations keep selling when the connection drops.

Where does Square cost you more than Final?
Based on Square's published Canadian pricing in October 2026, Square costs more than Final on:
Every Interac sale: 0.75% + 7¢ against Final's 0.5% + 7¢. A $50 debit sale costs 45¢ on Square and 32¢ on Final.
Credit sales over about $20: 2.5% against 1.99% + 10¢. A $40 sale costs $1.00 on Square and 90¢ on Final.
Every keyed-in sale: 3.3% + 15¢ against Final's 2.49% + 10¢.
Software: Square for Retail Plus is $79 per location per month. Final has no monthly software fee.
At a $40 average credit sale and 500 sales a month, the credit gap alone is about $52 a month. Add Interac and a $79 software plan and it keeps growing.
How do the other Square alternatives compare to Final?
Each has one big reason to look past it. Figures are based on each provider's published Canadian pricing in October 2026.
Helcim: your cost changes with every card
Helcim charges interchange plus 0.40% + 8¢ at under $50,000 a month in volume. Interchange-plus means the card network's fee (interchange) passes through and Helcim's markup sits on top, so the cost of a sale depends on the card your customer pulls out. Visa's in-store interchange on its top Infinite Privilege card is 2.08%¹. On that card, a $50 sale costs about $1.32 with Helcim. On Final's flat 1.99% + 10¢, it's $1.10, and you know the price before the customer taps.
Shopify POS: you pay every month, even the slow ones
Shopify POS has no free plan. Basic is $49 a month, and POS Pro adds $119 per location per month. That's $168 a month, or $2,016 a year, before you sell a thing. Its in-person rates of 2.4% to 2.6% are also above Final's 1.99% + 10¢ on any sale over about $25, and the Advanced plan requires a one-year or three-year term.
Moneris: three years before you can leave cleanly
Moneris starts you on a three-year term that renews automatically in six-month blocks. Leaving takes 45 days' notice and a $300 deactivation fee per location. Terminal rental runs $34.95 a month, which adds up to $1,258 per terminal over the first term. Its 2.65% + 10¢ credit rate is also higher than Final's on every sale: $1.16 against 90¢ on a $40 sale.
Lightspeed Retail: a subscription before your first sale
Lightspeed has no free tier. Its published plans start at US$89 a month and climb to US$149 and US$289, so the entry plan alone is US$1,068 a year. We couldn't find Canadian dollar plan prices or Canadian card rates on a public page. Final publishes its Canadian rates and charges no monthly software fee.
Clover: no public price to compare
In Canada, Clover is sold through TD Merchant Solutions, which began offering it in July 2026. We couldn't find current Canadian Clover pricing on a public page, so you're comparing a quote, not a rate card. Final's Canadian rates are published for anyone to check.

How do you switch from Square to Final?
Back up your Square data. In Square, go to Items, then Item library, then Actions, and choose Export Library for a CSV or Excel file. Download your customer list and sales reports too.
Bring it into Final. On the Integrations page in Merchant Hub, connect Square. Choose an ongoing sync to run both systems while you test, or a one-time import when you're ready to manage products in Final. CSV and Excel files work too, through bulk import.
Pick your hardware. Order Final terminals, or start with Tap to Pay on a phone. Here's what a phone can do as a POS.
Set up your checkout. Deploy a ready-made flow from the Flow Library, or adjust one in Flow Studio to match how you sell.
Run both for a week. Keep Square active until Final has handled a full week of sales and a clean end-of-day, then close your Square account.

So, which Square alternative is best in Canada?
Final. It beats Square on every Interac sale, every keyed-in sale and credit sales over about $20, with no monthly software fee. Against the rest, you skip Shopify's and Lightspeed's subscriptions, Helcim's card-by-card pricing, Moneris's higher rate and Clover's quote-only pricing. And you get a checkout you can shape around your business.
Rule of thumb: add up a full year of rates, software fees and contract costs, not just the headline rate. When you do, get started with Final and bring your Square data across from the Merchant Hub.
