Connecting Tap to Pay to an AI-built checkout takes no wiring. The flow carries the button, and a supported phone becomes the card reader. Here is why it works that way, and where the limits are.

Connecting Tap to Pay to an AI POS flow takes no integration work. In Final, the checkout flow your AI builds already carries the payment step: on a supported iPhone or NFC-equipped Android, a Tap to pay button appears at checkout and the phone itself becomes the card reader. There is nothing to pair and no code to write. The interesting part is why it works that way, because the answer marks the line between what an AI can build in a point of sale and what it has to connect to.

What does connecting Tap to Pay usually involve?

Far more than an app update. Tap to Pay looks like a software feature, but card acceptance (taking the merchant's side of a payment) is a regulated capability. On iPhone, an app needs a contactless entitlement from Apple (a per-app permission) and must integrate with a payment processor that supplies the certified reader configuration loaded onto each merchant's device¹. On Android, phone-as-reader products are built against PCI MPoC, the card industry's security standard for accepting payments on ordinary phones². Device, operating system, and market requirements shift often, so treat the specifics here as a snapshot: accurate as of publication in July 2026.

This is why a code generator cannot produce Tap to Pay. An AI can write a checkout screen in an afternoon, but no amount of generated code earns an entitlement or passes a certification lab. We went through this ourselves and documented it in how hard it is to build your own Tap to Pay app. The tap has to come from a platform that already holds those pieces.

How does an AI-built flow get a Tap to Pay button?

Because in Final, the flow defines the buttons and the platform defines the payments. A flow is the checkout experience that runs on your stations. You create one by describing what you want in Build, Final's prompt-based AI builder, or by connecting your own AI over MCP (here is how that works, and why every retail platform is heading this way). The flow that comes back includes payment options at checkout, Cash and Tap to pay among them.

The AI decides where the button sits and how your checkout looks. Final Pay decides everything that happens after the button is pressed: reader behavior, encryption, settlement to your bank through a payment processor. The model never touches card data. That separation is deliberate, and it is the difference between a POS an AI can build and a POS that merely has AI features. A layout mistake shows up in the live preview, where you can catch it. A payments mistake shows up in your bank account weeks later.

What do you need at the counter?

Three things, per the Tap to Pay guide in our help center:

  • A Native Station: the Final POS app running on an iPhone or an NFC-equipped Android device (setup takes a few minutes).

  • NFC turned on (the short-range wireless technology behind every tap).

  • Final Pay connected for your outlet.

On a supported device, Tap to Pay connects automatically and shows up as a reader in Station Settings under Payment. At checkout, tap the Tap to pay button and the phone becomes the reader. The customer taps a contactless card, or a phone or watch wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the sale completes like any other. What are the limits?

Two worth knowing before you commit your counter to it.

Tap to Pay is one device, start to finish. The sale must be rung up and paid on the same device. You cannot ring up an order on a Virtual Station (the browser-based POS) and take the tap on a separate iPhone, and Tap to Pay is not available in a web browser at all.

A phone is also not always the right reader. High-volume counters usually want a dedicated certified terminal with a customer-facing screen and receipt printing. The same flow drives both: at checkout, the amount goes to whichever reader the station uses. One distinction trips people up here: customers tapping phones and merchants accepting on phones are two different features. Your AI POS flow supports both sides either way.

So how do you connect Tap to Pay to an AI POS flow?

You do not, in any meaningful sense. You prompt the flow, and the connection is already there: the flow carries the button, and Final Pay carries the entitlement, the certifications, and the money. The rule of thumb: let an AI build your checkout, never your payments. Payments should be infrastructure the AI plugs into, not code it writes.
